　ボウイの1972年の傑作アルバム『ジギー・スターダスト（旧題：屈折する星屑の上昇と下降、そして火星から来た蜘蛛の群）』のオープニングの曲。
　このアルバムは、地球が後5年で滅びるというときに、宇宙からやってきた救世主「ジギー・スターダスト」がロックンロールで人類を救済しようとするが、最後にファンたちに殺害されるという物語がコンセプトとなっている。
　『ファイブ・イヤーズ』は、5年後に地球の滅亡が確定したことをニュースで知った無名の青年が、それまでに自分の知覚するものや経験することを全て心に記憶しておこうと決意する曲である。当時まだ20代半ばのボウイ青年が、末期の意識を以て周囲のあらゆる人々や事物に慈愛のまなざしを注ぐという曲を書くことができた事実に驚きを覚える。
